iphone 6 fingerprint scanner

A new Apple job posting suggests that Cupertino is beginning to work with fingerprint scanner technology, heavily rumored for the iPhone 5S. But if Apple is

hiring techs for this technology now, it’s more likely that biometric technology will arrive on next year’s iPhone 6 instead.

The reading of the Apple tea leaves is part intrigue, part insanity. Every year, we engage in the pastime of scrutinizing Apple marketing collateral, job postings, and quirks on the apple.com website as indicators of future Apple events. It’s not entirely our fault; the Steve Jobs era of Apple did plenty to instill this fervor. But it’s now a much more sober company under the direction of Tim Cook — yet we as a rumor mill still continue analyze patents, job postings, and innuendo, and imagine that they prognosticate the short-term future of Apple products like the iPhone.

Silly us.

This past week, we had another one of those Apple job postings that has the rumor mill alight, with the media pointing to it as proof positive that the iPhone 5S will have a fingerprint scanner. But given what we know already about the iPhone 5S — and the way Apple does things — does the job posting actually make more sense in suggesting fingerprint scanner tech for the iPhone 6 in 2014 instead? A widely circulated report highlights Steve Jobs’ involvement in developing the next two iPhones. Read how the tech media is most likely misinterpreting it to mean the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6.

In spite of the fact that Apple remains at the top of the tech sector, most people would agree that Cupertino has seen a downturn since the death of Steve Jobs. While it is possible that Apple was destined to come off of its highs at some point, one cannot escape the distinct possibility that all of the intangibles that Steve Jobs brought to Apple — his larger than life personality, his ability to prognosticate the future of consumer technology, and his ability to create buzz — is all sorely missed. Tim Cook was a viable replacement, but he is a manager, not a visionary.

However, for those of us who still lament the loss of Steve Jobs, it might come as a relief to know that he most likely had his hands in the development of the next two iPhones. However, the tech media — which is currently reporting this story to mean the 2013 “iPhone 5S” and 2014 “iPhone 6″ may not be doing the story justice. I think there’s reason to believe that Jobs had his eye on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7. Read More

Media Persists In 2013 Coverage Of “iPhone 6″

Posted by Michael Nace under iPhone 6 Opinion on Monday Apr 1, 2013

iPhone 6

In spite of the prevailing belief that 2013 will be the year of the refreshed iPhone 5S, fringe media is still covering the iPhone 6 rumors.

It’s amazing how, some six months into the new rumor cycle, the media and users alike have settled in to the prospect of the iPhone 5S for 2013 and not the iPhone 6. Yet, in spite of the fact that the “tea leaves” suggest that the 2013 iPhone will largely be a modest upgrade from the iPhone 5, the media is still hedging its bet against the possibility that Apple will shock the world and release a completely new iPhone 6. Impressive Apple Patent For New Form Factor Could Debut On iPhone 6

Posted by Michael Nace under iPHone 6 Rumors on Saturday Mar 30, 2013

iphone 6

A impressive, new Apple patent outlines a plan for an audacious, new smartphone design that deploys a curved screen around the entire device. Could this be the iPhone 6?

When it comes to concepts, it never seems like the futuristic concept becomes a reality. Think about concept cars: those amazing, next-generation drawings and renderings of other-worldly cars rarely turn out a finished product that we end up driving. Design concepts for everything tend to turn out to be iterative and evolutionary, rather than groundbreaking and revolutionary. The iPhone is a great example of this reality in play, as we prepare this year for what is likely to be a refreshed iPhone 5S.

A new patent from Apple, however, suggests that Cupertino has a next-generation design in mind for a future iPhone that, based on what we know about new technology coming down the pike, could turn out to be the elusive iPhone 6.

iPhone 6

A financial analyst with Barclays believes that the iPhone 6 will launch in 2013 along with the iPhone 5S — and that it will be the long-rumored budget iPhone, not an overhaul of the iPhone 5.

We may have just heard the final possible variation in the exponentially increasing iPhone rumor mill for 2013, which now suggests that the iPhone 6 will indeed launch in 2013, along with the iPhone 5S. But the real kicker? The iPhone 6 won’t be the large-screened overhaul that many are anticipating, but rather the el cheap-o iPhone that some believe Apple must produce in order to remain competitive in the smartphone market. iPhone 6 Rumors Big On Bluster, Thin On Evidence

Posted by Michael Nace under iPhone 6 Opinion on Tuesday Feb 19, 2013

iPhone 6 with big screen

In spite of a clear pattern of overhaul-refresh-overhaul-refresh with the iPhone line, the rumor mill still insists that there will be an overhauled iPhone 6 this year. But if Apple is indeed planning a completely new iPhone, where’s the evidence?

Like you, I scan the iPhone news and rumors each day and, thanks to some serious keyword fragmentation by the tech media, this year I have a whole bunch of keywords to search: iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and even “iPhone Math.” The fragmentation has been a bit annoying to cover, since having more than one viable keyword in the rumor mix has led to some crazy predictions — namely, that both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 will co-release in 2013. We’ve also been treated to rumors that the iPhone 5S will in fact be the el cheap-o iPhone that have been rumored for the past three years, and that the iPhone 6 will be Apple’s much-needed “phablet.” Read More

What We Know About iPhone 6 Production

Posted by Michael Nace under iPhone 6 Opinion on Saturday Feb 9, 2013

iPhone 6 with 5-inch screen

There are an increasing number of rumors indicating that a 5-inch iPhone 6 is on its way in 2013. If that’s the case, then where’s the evidence of ramped up production?

Yesterday on the iPhone 5 News Blog I wrote about the latest iPhone rumor: that some guy in China knows another guy in China who works for a parts supplier who says he saw the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6, and that the iPhone 6 is going to be the 5-inch “phablet” that we’ve been “promised” by the rumor mill. How some sketchy guy in a squalid parts supplier in mainland China got a glimpse at two prototypes of Apple’s purported, iPhones, no one knows — but there are no photos to back it up. Hopefully we’ve all moved on from this non-story.

But just in case you haven’t, I thought it would be worth laying out all of the evidence to date that supports the notion that the iPhone 6 is coming in 2013. Read More
