hiring techs for this technology now, it’s more likely that biometric technology will arrive on next year’s iPhone 6 instead.
The reading of the Apple tea leaves is part intrigue, part insanity. Every year, we engage in the pastime of scrutinizing Apple marketing collateral, job postings, and quirks on the apple.com website as indicators of future Apple events. It’s not entirely our fault; the Steve Jobs era of Apple did plenty to instill this fervor. But it’s now a much more sober company under the direction of Tim Cook — yet we as a rumor mill still continue analyze patents, job postings, and innuendo, and imagine that they prognosticate the short-term future of Apple products like the iPhone.
Silly us.

In spite of the fact that Apple remains at the top of the tech sector, most people would agree that Cupertino has seen a downturn since the death of Steve Jobs. While it is possible that Apple was destined to come off of its highs at some point, one cannot escape the distinct possibility that all of the intangibles that Steve Jobs brought to Apple — his larger than life personality, his ability to prognosticate the future of consumer technology, and his ability to create buzz — is all sorely missed. Tim Cook was a viable replacement, but he is a manager, not a visionary.
However, for those of us who still lament the loss of Steve Jobs, it might come as a relief to know that he most likely had his hands in the development of the next two iPhones. However, the tech media — which is currently reporting this story to mean the 2013 “iPhone 5S” and 2014 “iPhone 6″ may not be doing the story justice. When it comes to concepts, it never seems like the futuristic concept becomes a reality. Think about concept cars: those amazing, next-generation drawings and renderings of other-worldly cars rarely turn out a finished product that we end up driving. Design concepts for everything tend to turn out to be iterative and evolutionary, rather than groundbreaking and revolutionary. The iPhone is a great example of this reality in play, as we prepare this year for what is likely to be a refreshed iPhone 5S.

In spite of a clear pattern of overhaul-refresh-overhaul-refresh with the iPhone line, the rumor mill still insists that there will be an overhauled iPhone 6 this year. But if Apple is indeed planning a completely new iPhone, where’s the evidence?
Like you, I scan the iPhone news and rumors each day and, thanks to some serious keyword fragmentation by the tech media, this year I have a whole bunch of keywords to search: iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and even “iPhone Math.” The fragmentation has been a bit annoying to cover, since having more than one viable keyword in the rumor mix has led to some crazy predictions — namely, that both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 will co-release in 2013. There are an increasing number of rumors indicating that a 5-inch iPhone 6 is on its way in 2013. If that’s the case, then where’s the evidence of ramped up production?
Yesterday on the iPhone 5 News Blog I wrote about the latest iPhone rumor: that some guy in China knows another guy in China who works for a parts supplier who says he saw the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6, and that the iPhone 6 is going to be the 5-inch “phablet” that we’ve been “promised” by the rumor mill. How some sketchy guy in a squalid parts supplier in mainland China got a glimpse at two prototypes of Apple’s purported, iPhones, no one knows — but there are no photos to back it up. Hopefully we’ve all moved on from this non-story.
But just in case you haven’t, I thought it would be worth laying out all of the evidence to date that supports the notion that the iPhone 6 is coming in 2013. Read More
